The old section of Ankara is located on the top of a hill, the modern Ankara is at the bottom of the hill, and both sections have now merged. There is a fortress (hisar) on the top of the hill, the inner walls date to the 7th century and the outer walls constructed by the Byzantine Emperor Michael 11 are of the 9th cent.
